THE JABBERWOCK

WRITTEN & DIRECTED BY ANDREW WRIGHT

‘The Jabberwock’ is a beast made famous through a poem written in “Alice Through the Looking Glass” by Lewis Carroll in 1871.

In this sequel to “Alice in Wonderland,” Alice realises that she is travelling through an inverted world. She recognises that the verses on the pages of the books are written in mirror writing, holds a mirror to one of the poems and reads the reflected verse of the Jabberwocky.  She finds the nonsense verse as puzzling as the odd land that she has passed into which is later revealed as a dreamscape.

“Alice Through the Looking Glass” tells of Alice's adventures within a back to front world, mirroring the experience of a child who is coming to terms with the nonsensical world of adulthood.

For us the retelling of the Alice story is an opportunity to explore how a teenage Alice might deal with ‘coming of age’ whilst she works through the competing responsibilities, pressures and social expectations of family, friends, relationships, career and education; all the while trying to be true to herself. This challenge is at the heart of the tale we have created for you.

How does one stay in alignment with oneself and one’s dreams whilst facing the pressing realities of the real world? And what “beasts” are released when we speak against ourselves in pursuit of the approval of others; above our own hopes and dreams.

As with the original Alice stories we seek to walk the tightrope of light-hearted entertainment and deeper significance and hope that a return to the fantastical characters of Wonderland bring you as much joy as they do, reason to pause and consider your own dreams as you write your own story.

Please enjoy the show!
