UNIT 1.1: ELEMENTS OF DRAMA 1
This unit allows the students to explore the essential building blocks of drama known as the elements of drama and how using them can create dramatic meaning. The students will explore character, dramatic tension, focus, time and place and specifically how they assist in creating meaning for the audience. The students will explore all of these elements in a dramatic play structure using improvisation and devising techniques.
Getting to know you, group skills and trust
The aim of this lesson is to establish the group and ensure everyone knows each others names. To use a number of different team building skills and establish the way we want to work this term when we are in groups.
CHARACTER & STATUS
The aim of this lesson is to understand the building blocks of a character, namely status. Students will be able to articulate at the end of the lesson how status affects the characters and their relationships. They will explore this through movement, spatial dynamics and using props.
TENSION
The aim of this lesson is to understand the four different types of tension: task, relationship, mystery and surprise, and to experience how these tensions assist in creating structure and meaning.

The aim of this lesson is to apply all four tensions learnt in the previous lesson.
FOCUS
The aim of this lesson is to describe the three types of focus: acting focus, stage focus and dramatic focus. The students should be able to demonstrate all three.
