Hamelin
Hamelin
Hamelin is a darkly comic and thought-provoking retelling of the classic Pied Piper legend, set in a prosperous town built on the success of its booming cheese industry. Narrated by a young deaf orphan known only as "She," the story follows the citizens of Hamelin as they celebrate wealth, growth, and political success while turning a blind eye to inequality, greed, and those most in need.
When a small rat problem rapidly spirals into a devastating plague, the town's self-serving mayor and influential business leaders find themselves powerless to stop the crisis. Their salvation appears in the form of a mysterious stranger known as the Piper, who promises to rid Hamelin of its vermin in exchange for a substantial fee. Desperate, the town agrees. But when the Piper succeeds and the rats disappear overnight, the people of Hamelin refuse to honour their bargain.
What follows is a powerful tale of broken promises, collective responsibility, and the consequences of placing profit above integrity. Blending sharp satire, memorable characters, humour, and tragedy, Hamelin explores themes of leadership, accountability, social justice, and the importance of keeping one's word. This compelling adaptation challenges audiences to consider what happens when a community chooses self-interest over honour—and whether every debt eventually comes due.
